This Unique House in detail

53 Jefferson was built in 1908 upon a stone foundation. It was one of the first houses in which a furnace was used to heat the house instead of a fireplace.  As a result, the style for a few years, was to not have a fireplace. When we purchased the house, the furnace could either burn coal or oil, but we have since replaced the furnace with a newer, more efficient one.  The basement is unfinished and contains hookups for washer and dryer.  It is also where you access the attached two car garage.  Once you have an attached garage, and eliminate the need to warm your car up, scrape off ice, brush off snow or lug groceries through a downpour, you will never want to go back to an unattached garage.   The garage itself is unique in that its a two car tandem garage - one car wide, two cars (or in our case a car and SUV) deep. The basement and garage can get water - basement about once a year, garage during heavier rainstorms - but the water drains away and quickly dries out.

The stairs from the basement lead to the main floor via the kitchen.  We use the kitchen area for most of our meals except during the summer.  The kitchen is full of charm and character, and of course is unique.  It has a main area, with an electric stove/oven (gas line still exists if your preference is to cook on gas), a pantry area with two sliding doors for storage, a small granite area and a cabinet for a microwave.   Floors are laminate, replicating wide plank flooring.  The main kitchen area is 11x13 feet.

There is also a side area which contains custom made cabinets, more granite counterspace, dishwasher and farmhouse sink. This area is 6x6 feet

Off the kitchen to the right is the downstairs half bath and then the sunroom.   At a later date, the sunroom and downstairs bathroom were added to the exterior of the house, resulting in the unique feature of having shingles inside the house.  The bathroom floor is tile .  It measures 4x6 feet

.The sun-room is heated and used everyday except for the coldest days of winter.  The three glass sides are all glass sliders and open in the summer to create a space in the evening to cool off and listen to the crickets.  During the winter it is our cat's favorite room as its filled with warm sunshine.  It is freshly carpeted and re-sheetrocked as of April 2014.  It measures 10x16 feet.

We have the dining room set as formal dining room where we eat Sunday dinner. The floors are pine and original to the house having been resurfaced after years of being covered by carpet.  The room measures 11x13.

The living room floors were also refinished and are the original pine floors. This floor as well suffered from years of being carpeted, and was even painted around the edge of an area rug.  The room is 22x13 and gets great light in the afternoon.  Some of the charm of this room is the stained glass window in the corner on the stairs, and the large radiators which are great to sit on in the winter!

Upstairs you will find four rooms - two bedrooms, a full bath and a walkthrough bedroom which we currently use as an office.  The two bedrooms each contain walk in closets.  The upstairs rooms are carpeted - we have only replaced the carpet in the SE bedroom and the floors were in similar condition (rough/painted) to the ones downstairs.  We are unsure of the condition of the other floors.

The SE bedroom (boys room) is the warmest and brightest room in the house.  It was designed for our son and has beadboard to about 6 feet(which can easily be removed) and sky/clouds above the beadboard. This carpet is roughly 10 years old. Its walk in closet is 8x6 feet and the room is 11x13.

The SW bedroom we use as the master bedroom.  While its bright and sunny from the afternoon on, we chose this room as it remains darker in the morning. As with the SE bedroom, there is a nice size walk in closet - a little smaller at 8x5, but the size of the room is 13x13.

The spare room aka my office has three doors - one to the hall, one to the bedroom and one to the bathroom.  It sits on the north side of the house and is used by occasional guests.  This is a unique room in that its a walk through, but not a railroad type.  It measures 11x11.  The carpet and wallpaper preexist our ownership
The bath includes a tub and is 6x6 feet.

On the way to the master bedroom, you pass the walk-up attic.  This space is unaccounted for in the square footage, but can easily be converted into two more bedrooms.  It measures the entire house and the only unusable space is where the stairs and chimney are.  I'd provide a picture, but there's a lot of boxes up there.
